The 2026 Maserati MC20 Cielo: A Masterclass in Open-Air Supercar Evolution

For a century and more, Maserati has navigated a tempestuous journey through automotive history, its iconic trident emblem adorning vehicles that have spanned from Le Mans conquerors to elegant grand tourers and even the formidable Ferrari Enzo-derived MC12. But as the legendary Italian marque pivots towards an electrified future, a crucial question arises: what does the Maserati badge truly signify in the contemporary automotive landscape?

The answer, increasingly, lies not just in heritage, but in a potent blend of racing prowess and forward-thinking engineering. Maserati’s revitalized commitment to motorsport is undeniable. No longer merely drawing inspiration from past glories, the brand is actively competing and winning in Formula E and GT2 racing, even producing bespoke, small-batch track weapons like the MCX-20. While the Grecale SUV may remain Maserati’s volume seller, the invigorating return to the track injects a much-needed dose of adrenaline into the very soul of the brand.

This strategic resurgence was heralded by the debut of the MC20 – Maserati Corse 2020 – three years prior. Developed in collaboration with the renowned racing engineering firm Dallara, the MC20’s advanced carbon fiber monocoque chassis was ingeniously designed to accommodate a spectrum of body styles, from the coupe to a convertible, and indeed, a future all-electric variant. Critically, this platform underpinned Maserati’s first genuine supercar in over a decade and a half, and it proved to be a resounding success.

Now, stepping into the rarefied air of the Maserati MC20 Cielo review landscape, I find myself behind the wheel of its open-top sibling. While mechanically identical to its coupe counterpart, distinguished primarily by its innovative folding hardtop, the Cielo imbues the driving experience with an entirely new dimension. It offers an unparalleled connection to its charismatic V6 heart without compromising the exhilarating dynamics, all while amplifying the inherent style and sophistication synonymous with Maserati. In a fiercely competitive and rapidly evolving supercar segment, the MC20 Cielo emerges not just as a compelling contender, but as a definitive statement of Maserati’s future trajectory.

While the Cielo shares the MC20’s groundbreaking carbon fiber structure, Maserati has meticulously reinforced the chassis to compensate for the inherent reduction in rigidity often associated with convertible designs. The result is a modest 143-pound weight penalty, a remarkably low figure considering the inclusion of a sophisticated electro-mechanical roof mechanism. This ingenious system, capable of retracting the composite and electrochromic glass panel in a mere 12 seconds, allows for instantaneous control over the cabin’s ambiance, from the sun-drenched openness of a perfect day to the shaded intimacy of a cooler afternoon. The electrochromic glass itself is a marvel, offering adjustable tinting that modulates the intensity of natural light flooding the cockpit.

From an aesthetic standpoint, the visual divergence between the MC20 Cielo and its coupe sibling is subtle, a testament to the cohesive design philosophy. The roofline flows seamlessly, with the primary differentiation found in a reimagined decklid and a discreetly integrated rear window. To accommodate the necessary structural modifications beneath the skin, Maserati has artfully repositioned the engine air intakes. The introduction of a new “XX” style wheel option further refines the exterior customization possibilities, rounding out a refreshingly concise list of visual updates.

My particular test vehicle was resplendent in the “Acquamarina” paint – a hue that, in my ten years of automotive critique, stands out as one of the most captivating I’ve encountered. Appearing as a light, ethereal blue at first glance, its pearlescent finish dances and shifts under varying light conditions, revealing a spectrum of subtle undertones and imbuing the car with a dynamic, ever-changing character. This exceptional color, unfortunately, is exclusive to the Primaserie Launch Edition, a limited production run of just 60 units designed to showcase Maserati’s bespoke Fuoriserie customization program.

In the spirit of modern hypercars, the MC20 Cielo offers an extensive array of optional carbon fiber embellishments. However, my personal preference leans towards Maserati’s uncompromising vision when presented in its more unadorned form. By eschewing ostentatious aerodynamic appendages and superfluous styling flourishes, the MC20 Cielo achieves a profound statement of understated elegance. It’s a car that commands attention not through aggressive posturing, but through its inherent purity of line and proportion. While perhaps not as overtly flamboyant as some Italian rivals from Maranello or Sant’Agata Bolognese, its design possesses a timeless allure that transcends fleeting trends.

The MC20’s debut not only signaled Maserati’s triumphant return to the racing circuit but also introduced the revolutionary “Nettuno” engine. This potent 90-degree, twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine unleashes a formidable 621 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque. In the Cielo, this power translates into a blistering 0-60 mph sprint in approximately three seconds and a top speed nudging 199 mph. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, a unit that expertly balances rapid shifts with refined drivability.

Within the broader context of today’s supercar landscape, the Maserati MC20 Cielo’s twin-turbo V6 powertrain, while potent, presents a somewhat conventional proposition. Competitors such as the McLaren Artura and Ferrari 296 GTB also employ V6 configurations, albeit with more exotic 120-degree cylinder banks, which contribute to a more V12-like exhaust symphony, and crucially, incorporate hybrid electric assistance. Even the considerably more accessible Chevrolet Corvette Z06 boasts a cutting-edge, naturally aspirated V8 designed for high-revving exhilaration.

However, the Nettuno engine’s mandate is far broader than that of its specialized rivals; it serves as the powerhouse for other Maserati models, including the Grecale Trofeo and GranTurismo Trofeo. While it may not possess the exotic mechanical complexity of some alternatives, it compensates with an abundance of character. Its exhaust note deviates from the typical timbre of a 90-degree V6, offering a more spirited, less overtly aggressive tone. Yet, this sonic nuance is often beautifully overshadowed by the intoxicating whoosh of its twin turbochargers, a sound that truly captivates the driver.

With the roof retracted, the symphony of the turbos becomes even more pronounced. The satisfying flutter as you lift off the accelerator and the resonant whistle as you reapply throttle create an engaging acoustic experience. While the Cielo isn’t overtly boisterous, its surge of power arrives with a captivating immediacy following a brief, and I would argue, charming, hint of turbo lag. This characteristic lends it a delightfully old-school feel, a departure from the instantaneous response of some modern rivals, rewarding the driver with a dramatic and visceral acceleration once the turbos are fully engaged.

The astute calibration of the closely stacked gear ratios ensures the Nettuno engine remains firmly within its optimal boost band as you progress through the gears. Even as 621 horsepower begins to feel less astronomical in an era increasingly populated by electrified hybrids, the Cielo’s on-road performance feels considerably more potent than its tabulated statistics might suggest.

In dynamic driving scenarios, it is virtually indistinguishable from its coupe sibling. The chassis, featuring a sophisticated double-wishbone suspension setup at both the front and rear, works in concert with adaptive dampers. This system allows for a significant stiffening of the suspension in the aggressive Sport and Corsa modes, while retaining a remarkably compliant and comfortable demeanor in the more relaxed GT setting, making it a surprisingly adept daily driver.

While the suspension might not possess the almost ethereal plushness of a McLaren Artura, it offers more than enough composure for spirited weekend drives or even extended journeys. Furthermore, despite its advanced carbon fiber monocoque construction and distinctive dihedral doors, the relatively low sill height of the MC20 Cielo facilitates remarkably easy ingress and egress, a practical consideration that significantly enhances its overall usability and daily appeal.

The inherent versatility of the Maserati MC20 Cielo’s chassis is brilliantly showcased on the winding canyon roads of Southern California. It navigates tight turns with an exquisite balance, confidently deploying its considerable power upon corner exit. Though the steering may not offer the most granular feedback, it is exceptionally quick and direct. This, combined with an agile and tenacious front end, contributes to a sensation of lightness that belies the car’s actual mass, creating an engaging and confidence-inspiring driving dynamic.

The optional carbon-ceramic brakes, a $10,000 investment, deliver racecar-like stopping power. They demand a substantial pedal effort to achieve maximum deceleration, an attribute perfectly suited for aggressive driving through mountainous terrain but requiring a period of adjustment for more sedate city driving. My test vehicle was further enhanced by a $2,300 electronic limited-slip differential and a $5,500 set of 20-inch forged lightweight wheels, each contributing to the car’s refined performance envelope.

The interior of the MC20 Cielo builds upon the significant quality enhancements introduced with the original MC20. My tester featured a striking two-tone Ice/Grey finish, accented with subtle triangular stitching on the seat cushions and backrests. The dashboard masterfully blends carbon fiber and suede trim, elegantly housing two 10-inch displays for digital instrumentation and infotainment duties.

Mirroring its exterior, the MC20 Cielo’s interior is characterized by a refreshing simplicity. The majority of controls are intuitively integrated within the central touchscreen interface. The exposed carbon fiber center console houses an updated drive mode selector and a curated selection of essential physical buttons, maintaining a focus on driver engagement.

While the cabin is undeniably functional and aesthetically pleasing, it leans towards a more conventional design ethos. The floating infotainment screen, positioned to the right of the steering wheel, might strike some as a somewhat belated addition, lacking the seamless integration found elsewhere in the cabin. In contrast to the car’s enduring mechanical and design elements, I suspect the MC20’s onboard technology may be the aspect that ages most rapidly.

The 2025 Maserati MC20 Cielo commands a starting price of approximately $262,695, inclusive of destination fees. However, as is often the case with ultra-high-performance vehicles, the final price can escalate significantly with optional extras. My meticulously configured tester, complete with a $39,000 exterior carbon fiber package, the aforementioned carbon-ceramic brakes, and a $7,000 interior carbon fiber package, reached a total of $339,700. When juxtaposed with the starting MSRP of a Lamborghini Huracan Tecnica Spyder ($239,000) which typically tops out below the $300,000 mark, the MC20 Cielo’s elevated price point presents a formidable challenge as it seeks to establish a significant foothold within the fiercely competitive supercar arena.

Taken as a holistic assessment, however, the MC20 Cielo represents a formidable and deeply compelling entrant into the supercar domain. It is undeniably stylish, exhilaratingly powerful, and an absolute joy to drive, ticking all the essential boxes for a car of this caliber. Nevertheless, given its considerable price tag, the relative conventionality of its V6 powertrain becomes a more pronounced consideration, especially when compared to rivals pushing the boundaries of performance with innovative hybrid and electric powertrains. Furthermore, certain elements of its interior technology integration, while functional, do not quite achieve the same level of refinement as found in its most direct competitors.

Despite these minor reservations, the MC20 Cielo embodies precisely the kind of halo vehicle Maserati should be championing. Six-figure masterpieces like the MC20 Cielo and the GranTurismo serve as potent platforms for the Italian brand to showcase its engineering prowess and design artistry. Thankfully, these focused endeavors have allowed Maserati to leave behind less impactful mass-market ventures. The brand is undeniably embarking on a transformative new era, and captivating machines like the MC20 Cielo unequivocally reaffirm Maserati’s status as a preeminent force in the world of exclusive, high-performance automobiles.
