The 2023 Maserati MC20 Cielo: A Timeless Return to Form and the Future of Italian Supercar Craftsmanship

For over a century, Maserati has navigated the automotive landscape, a veritable chameleon under various custodians, its iconic trident emblem morphing in meaning from the roaring twenties to the cutting edge of electric propulsion. The brand’s journey has been punctuated by eras of outright racing dominance, the creation of elegant grand tourers, and even a hypercar born from Ferrari’s formidable Enzo platform. But as Maserati embarks on its ambitious electrification journey, a pivotal question arises: what does the three-pointed star truly signify in the modern era of high-performance automobiles?

This question is profoundly answered by a renewed commitment to the racetrack. Gone are the days when Maserati merely alluded to its glorious racing heritage. Today, the Trident is back in full force, actively competing in prestigious Formula E and GT2 championships, and even producing limited-run track-focused machines like the MCXtrema. While the practical Grecale SUV remains the brand’s volume seller, it’s this aggressive return to circuit racing that injects a vital sense of exhilaration and aspiration back into the Maserati identity.

he MC20, an acronym representing Maserati Corse 2020, marked the inception of this transformative shift upon its unveiling three years ago. Developed in collaboration with the renowned motorsport engineering firm Dallara, the MC20’s revolutionary carbon-fiber monocoque chassis was ingeniously engineered to accommodate a variety of body styles, including a coupe, a spyder, and the groundwork for a future battery-electric variant. Crucially, this platform yielded Maserati’s first truly exceptional supercar in over sixteen years.

Fast forward to today, and I find myself at the helm of the drop-top sibling: the 2023 Maserati MC20 Cielo. While mechanically identical to its coupe counterpart, its defining feature—a sophisticated retractable hardtop blending metal and electrochromic glass—unlocks an entirely new dimension of the driving experience. This innovation allows for an unparalleled connection with the characterful V6 engine without compromising on the dynamic prowess or the inherent elegance that defines the coupe. The Maserati MC20 Cielo isn’t just a compelling contender in the booming Italian supercar market; it’s a clear declaration of Maserati’s future direction and a benchmark for luxury performance cars.

The Cielo, while leveraging the coupe’s inherent carbon-fiber architecture, features strategic structural reinforcements to compensate for the inherent rigidity compromises typically associated with open-top configurations. This meticulous engineering results in an added weight of just 143 pounds, a remarkably modest figure considering the inclusion of a complex, electro-mechanical roof mechanism that can retract or deploy in a mere 12 seconds. The innovative roof panel itself integrates a metal frame with an electrochromic glass section, offering adjustable tinting on demand, allowing occupants to control the intrusion of natural light into the cabin with effortless precision.

Visually, the transition from coupe to Cielo remains remarkably subtle. The silhouette is virtually indistinguishable, differentiated primarily by a reimagined rear decklid and a small, aerodynamically sculpted rear window. To accommodate the necessary mechanical adjustments beneath the surface, Maserati strategically repositioned the engine air intakes. A new “XX” style wheel design also joins the options list, completing the understated exterior enhancements.

The particular test vehicle I experienced was finished in an arresting Acquamarina paint. This hue, quite possibly one of the most captivating I’ve encountered in years, initially presents as a delicate shade of light blue. However, its true magic unfolds as ambient light conditions shift, revealing a mesmerizing pearlescent effect that imbues the paintwork with an astonishing depth and variety of subtle color transitions. While this exquisite finish is exclusive to the Primaserie Launch Edition, a limited run of just 60 vehicles designed to showcase Maserati’s bespoke Fuoriserie customization program, it serves as a potent illustration of the brand’s flair for bespoke automotive artistry.

In line with contemporary supercar design philosophies, the MC20 Cielo offers a plethora of optional carbon fiber embellishments. However, my personal preference leans towards Maserati’s creation in its more unadorned state. By eschewing gratuitous aerodynamic appendages or superfluous styling flourishes, the MC20 Cielo asserts itself as a vehicle of innate, sophisticated style. It’s a car that commands attention not through ostentation, but through its pure, unadulterated design elegance, proving that it needs no tacked-on accouterments to make a profound statement. While perhaps not as overtly flamboyant as its direct rivals from Lamborghini or Ferrari, the MC20 Cielo projects an enduring, timeless aesthetic.

The MC20’s debut not only heralded Maserati’s triumphant return to the world of motorsport but also introduced the groundbreaking Nettuno engine. This 3.0-liter, 90-degree twin-turbocharged V6 powerhouse generates an exhilarating 621 horsepower and a formidable 538 pound-feet of torque. In the Cielo, this translates to an astonishing 0-60 mph sprint in approximately three seconds and a breathtaking top speed of 199 mph. All this prodigious power is channeled to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Within the current landscape of exotic sports cars, the Maserati MC20 Cielo’s twin-turbo V6 powertrain, while potent, adopts a relatively conventional configuration. Its contemporaries, such as the McLaren Artura and Ferrari 296 GTB, also utilize V6 engines but opt for a more exotic 120-degree architecture, which contributes to a sound profile reminiscent of a V12, alongside the integration of electric motors. Even the significantly more accessible Chevrolet Corvette Z06 boasts a novel, high-revving, naturally-aspirated V8.

However, the Nettuno engine is engineered for a broader mandate, serving as the beating heart for other potent Maserati models like the Grecale Trofeo and GranTurismo Trofeo. While it may not possess the exotic allure of some of its rivals, it is undeniably brimming with character. Its auditory signature deviates from the typical note of a 90-degree V6; it’s more of a lively, effervescent crescendo rather than a raucous roar. In truth, the captivating whoosh of its twin turbochargers frequently dominates the engine’s intrinsic sound, adding another layer to its unique acoustic experience.

With the roof retracted, the subtle flutter of the turbochargers upon throttle release, followed by a distinct whistle as boost builds, creates an intoxicating symphony. Although the Cielo is not excessively loud by supercar standards, its surge of power is immediate and potent, arriving after a brief, charmingly old-school moment of turbo lag. This characteristic, while lacking the razor-sharp immediacy of some modern competitors, delivers a profoundly rewarding burst of acceleration when it truly engages.

The tightly spaced gear ratios ensure that the MC20 remains firmly within its optimal boost range as you cycle through the gears. While 621 horsepower may seem modest in an era increasingly dominated by hybrid powertrains, the Cielo feels significantly quicker on the road than its tabulated performance figures might suggest.

Distinguishing the Cielo from its coupe counterpart when cornering proves an almost impossible task. The chassis employs a sophisticated double-wishbone suspension setup at both the front and rear, complemented by adaptive dampers. This sophisticated system allows the suspension to significantly firm up in the aggressive Sport and Corsa modes, while maintaining remarkably compliant ride characteristics for daily driving in the more comfortable GT setting.

While the suspension may not offer the absolute silken ride of a McLaren Artura, it provides a level of comfort that is more than adequate for daily commutes or extended road trips. Furthermore, despite its advanced carbon-fiber construction and signature butterfly doors, the MC20 Cielo features relatively low sill heights, which significantly eases ingress and egress, further enhancing its practicality and everyday usability.

The inherent versatility of the Maserati MC20 Cielo is brilliantly showcased on the demanding, winding canyon roads of Southern California. It navigates tight turns with commendable poise and balance, confidently deploying its formidable power out of corner exits. Although the steering might not be the most talkative in the segment, it is undeniably quick and direct. Coupled with an agile and remarkably grippy front end, this dynamic synergy creates a sensation of a car that feels considerably lighter than its physical dimensions and specifications might suggest.

The optional carbon-ceramic brakes, a substantial $10,000 upgrade, perform with racecar-like tenacity. They require a significant application of pedal force to achieve maximum retardation. While this intensity is perfectly suited for spirited driving on open roads, it necessitates a period of acclimatization for smoother operation in urban environments. My particular test vehicle was further enhanced by a $2,300 electronic limited-slip differential and a $5,500 set of lightweight 20-inch forged alloy wheels, both contributing to its enhanced performance envelope.

The interior of the Cielo builds upon the palpable improvements in material quality and craftsmanship introduced with the MC20 coupe three years prior. My tester featured an elegant two-tone Ice/Grey finish, accentuated by distinctive triangular stitching adorning the seat cushions and backrests. The dashboard elegantly blends carbon fiber and suede accents, seamlessly integrating two 10-inch displays to manage the digital instrument cluster and the infotainment system.

Mirroring its exterior philosophy, the MC20 Cielo’s interior prioritizes a sense of understated simplicity. The majority of vehicle controls are consolidated within the central touchscreen interface. The carbon-fiber center console, left exposed to showcase its intricate weave, houses an updated drive mode selector and a select few essential physical buttons.

While the interior is undeniably functional and aesthetically pleasing, its overall character leans towards conventional. The floating infotainment screen, positioned to the right of the steering wheel, occasionally feels like an afterthought in its integration. Unlike the rest of the vehicle’s meticulously crafted elements, there’s a lingering suspicion that the MC20’s technological suite might age less gracefully than its timeless design.

The 2023 Maserati MC20 Cielo commences its pricing at $262,695, inclusive of a $1,495 destination charge. However, as is often the case with high-performance vehicles, the final tally can escalate significantly with the addition of desirable options. My specific test vehicle, equipped with a $39,000 exterior carbon fiber package, the aforementioned $10,000 carbon-ceramic brakes, and a $7,000 interior carbon fiber package, reached a total of $339,700. Considering that a Lamborghini Huracan Tecnica Spyder begins at $239,000 and typically tops out below the $300,000 mark, the Cielo’s elevated price point presents a notable challenge as it strives to carve out its distinct niche within the highly competitive supercar market.

Taken as a holistic entity, however, the Cielo emerges as a formidable contender in the premium supercar arena. It seamlessly blends striking aesthetics, prodigious power, and an utterly thrilling driving experience, ticking all the essential boxes for discerning automotive enthusiasts. Nevertheless, given its considerable price tag, the conventionality of its V6 powertrain becomes a more pronounced point of consideration, particularly when compared to competitors who are aggressively pushing the boundaries with innovative hybrid and electric propulsion systems. Furthermore, certain aspects of its interior technology integration, while functional, do not quite match the seamless sophistication found in comparable vehicles.

Despite these minor reservations, the MC20 represents precisely the caliber of vehicle Maserati should be championing. Its six-figure creations, such as the MC20 Cielo and the GranTurismo, provide the storied Italian brand with a crucial platform to showcase its engineering prowess and design acumen. Thankfully, this focus has led to a deliberate departure from past mass-market missteps. Maserati is unequivocally embracing a new era, and exhilarating automobiles like the Maserati MC20 Cielo are instrumental in re-establishing the Italian marque as a bona fide force in the world of luxury performance automobiles.
